Cancer treatment

Cancer patients and their relatives often feel a degree of confusion and lack a sufficient understanding of cancer treatments due to the range in the choice of treatments used for the same form of cancer. Some patients undergo chemotherapy prior to surgery, while others may only require surgery. Some patients may need chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, while others are selected to receive a type of targeted cancer therapy. The wide range of potential treatments available can lead to misunderstandings and comparisons between treatment plans suggested by oncologists.

The reality is that treatment choice depends on the diagnosis and cancer stage at that time. Once the cancer is diagnosed, doctors will need to perform further tests to identify the accurate staging of the cancer. This also means consultations with other specialists in other fields - such as surgeons and radiologists - who will assist in the decision making process with regard to subsequent treatment planning and its objectives. Currently, the treatments available are as follows:

  • Surgery: This may come in the form of minimally invasive surgeries for cancers including Laparoscopic Colectomy to treat colon cancer, or a lumpectomy to treat breast cancer. A Lumpectomy can be used to remove the lump in the breast where a mastectomy or removal of the breast is not required.
  • Radiotherapy: In cases not suited to surgery, utilizing radiotherapy or in conjunction with chemotherapy may offer some pain relief, such as for cancers that have spread to the bones in order to stop the tumor bleeding, or to stop the cancer from deteriorating further, such as for tumors that place pressure on the spinal column, resulting in leg weakness or an inability to walk.
  • Chemotherapy.
  • Hormonal therapy: This is used to treat breast cancer and prostate cancer, among others, due to its effectiveness and minimal side effects.
  • High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment: Aimed at destroying prostate cancer cells in their initial stages, HIFU can be effective in curing cancer, although its efficiency depends on the age and strength of the patient. This treatment can eradicate the need for prostate surgery or chemotherapy.
  • Targeted cancer therapy: This treatment is highly effective when compared with chemotherapy and its side effects are minimal.
  • Cancer immunotherapy: In addition to improving white blood cell function, this treatment option has fewer side effects than chemotherapy. Immunotherapy can be used to treat melanoma skin, lung, head and neck, bladder and urinary tract, kidney, and liver cancers as well as some forms of lymphatic cancer, breast cancer, chemotherapy-resistant stomach cancer, and colon cancer.
  • Haploidentical hematopoietic transplantation: This is used in the treatment of childhood leukemia or thalassemia.
  • Photopheresis: A cell-based immunomodulatory therapy, which alters the child's white blood cells to help fight transplant complications. It can be used to treat infants weighing 10kg or less, or in children aged 2 years of age.

Technology used in fertility treatments

Samitivej has treated Thai and Foreign national patients from more than 38 countries and has had a success rate of up to 44% (Calculated through analysis of patients seeking fertility treatment, as well as successful pregnancies and safe births taking place at Samitivej Hospitals only).

We make use of the following diagnostic techniques: pelvic examination with a vaginal ultrasound scan; Hysterosalpingography; sperm analysis; sperm selection; hormonal assessment; assisted reproductive technologies, including IVF, E.T., ICSI, GIFT; sperm retrieval; and TESE in cases of male castration. Additionally, we provide surgery to reverse female castration (ovariectomy) as well as a number of other innovations in the field of medical science, as follows:

  • In vitro maturation (IVM): The first of its kind available in Thailand, this technique has been researched and developed at Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital, where we have achieved a completely safe form of treatment that also closely mirrors nature. This means that patients experience none of the pain or risk that can be associated with hormonal stimulation.
  • Improved fertility rates and increased chance of conception with calcium ionophore technique. This substance is used alongside assisted reproductive technologies at Samitivej after being researched and developed to be successful in helping couples conceive.
  • Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS): This involves analysis of chromosome numerical abnormalities and potential embryo irregularities such as short-arm pairs of chromosomes that could increase a child’s risk of being born with Down syndrome.
  • Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD): Once a genetic irregularity has been detected, healthy embryos - free from genetic issues - can be transplanted back into the womb.
  • Uterine receptivity test: This involves assessing the readiness of the women’s uterus prior to embryo implantation, including analysis of all 238 genes associated with uterine maturation and screening of the mitochondrion, which are the energy sources of embryonic cells, and can therefore increase the chance of successful conception by up to 50%.

Caring for pregnancies with a high risk of preterm birth

Raising the standard of care for pregnant women and their unborn children by reducing the risk of a premature birth, while also becoming a role model for other medical institutions to follow. Our Preterm Prevention Clinic helps perform detailed risk assessments and subsequent treatment planning to reduce the risk of a premature birth, or to provide adequate preparation of the fetus if a preterm birth becomes inevitable.

The Preterm Prevention Clinic applies the principles of the 3P Concept of treatment to reduce the risk of a preterm birth by up to 50% (when compared to statistics provided by WHO ).

Utilizing the full range of neonatal healthcare equipment, over 150 expert pediatricians offer care and treatment in various areas of medicine. Also committed to non-stop progression, Samitivej Children’s Hospital has signed an exchange and development partnership with the following two leading internationally renowned children’s hospitals: Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, U.S.A. and Takatsuki General Hospital, Japan. These partnerships will enable the exchange of innovative technologies used in the diagnoses and treatments taking place in the respective neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and pediatric intensive care units (PICU), allowing for immediate and targeted care to take place, thus improving overall efficiency and results.
