Invisalign braces

Highlights:

  • Invisalign, or invisible aligners, are specially designed to suit the needs of each individual, making them suitable for any age or gender. Additionally, the comfort and subtlety of these aligners means the mouth is not as prone to irritation as it would be with other, more traditional methods of alignment.
  • Dental reconstruction with Invisalign takes around 1–2 years on average to complete, although they have been known to produce results in a mere 9 months. The time span depends entirely on the orthodontic situation of the individual, but Invisalign reconstruction has been found to take less time than regular braces to repair any teeth misalignment.
  • Using invisible aligners can also help users maintain healthy gums as the nature of these aligners allows for more efficient cleaning of the gums and teeth to take place when compared to traditional braces, meaning the risk of cavities and gingivitis is also significantly reduced.

Invisalign are clear, removable aligners that are specifically designed for each individual, meaning they are suited to any age or gender. These aligners are effective in straightening teeth, with this method being a little-known way to leave the mouth looking great. They differ from traditional metal braces in that they gradually and naturally straighten teeth but are removable, making cleaning teeth and eating much easier than when using other orthodontic measures.

The Invisalign timeline

It takes around 1–2 years to straighten teeth using the Invisalign method, which is a significantly shorter time span than traditional braces. Nevertheless, the length of time required to repair any issues depends on the orthodontic structure of the user, so timelines may differ from case to case. Invisalign users are required to meet their orthodontist every 6–8 weeks to monitor their progress and replace their existing aligners with a new set, with each set designed to straighten the teeth gradually until the desired outcome is achieved. The number of sets used is dictated by the individual’s dental situation.

Invisalign offers greater comfort

Invisalign clear aligners improve the smiles of users as no dental instrumentation is visible to others. Invisalign aligners also offer greater dental comfort and reduced gum irritation, thus completely eradicating the problem of metal piercing the inside of cheeks associated with traditional braces. Moreover, these devices can be removed, enabling users to clean their teeth and eat without worry, meaning daily lives are unaffected. The risk of developing cavities and gingivitis is also significantly reduced.

Invisalign technology has been continuously developed over the past 22 years, providing over 8 million people with winning smiles. Invisible aligners are therefore suited to any person with dental problems. It is a viable option for anyone looking to improve the look of their teeth. It has a proven track record among orthodontists throughout the world, and is enjoying a surge in popularity during the 21st century.

Benefits associated with Invisalign

  • Improved gum health: Research has found that using Invisalign to straighten teeth is linked to an improvement in gum health as this method allows for more effective cleaning of the teeth and gums to take place, thus reducing the chance of developing cavities and gingivitis.
  • Easier cleaning: The traditional metal braces used to straighten teeth require wiring and brackets where food and plaque can easily accumulate. However, these aligners involve no wiring whatsoever, meaning that the risk of plaque build-up, cavities and gum disease can be minimized. The improved dental health is therefore a result of the greater ease with which the teeth and mouth can be cleaned.
  • Effortless chewing and speaking: For many people, the position of their teeth and jaws can cause issues when speaking and chewing food but using Invisalign offers a solution to these problems as they can help reposition the teeth so that the joints and bones involved with jaw movement are not placed under too much pressure. Additionally, invisible aligners are no impediment to speech and can easily be removed when eating to ensure no problems in that regard.
  • Reducing the risk of injury associated with installation: Invisalign involves no wiring or metal parts, so the issue of metal parts digging into the cheeks, mouth and gums is eliminated, as is the issue of metal becoming loose during the installation process.

The Invisalign process

  • Users will consult an orthodontist, who will offer advice regarding this form of treatment and print an image upon which the aligners will be based.
  • The orthodontist will then use an arthroscopic technology program to build a 3-dimensional model based on the user’s dental situation, showing each stage of the process, including each set of aligners, which may range from 12 to 48 sets depending on the individual’s program.
  • The user will then receive their first set of Invisalign aligners.

Users are required to wear their set of aligners every day for at least 22 hours, with each set requiring 1–2 weeks of use depending on the recommendations of the orthodontist in charge. However, they may be removed when eating, brushing teeth or flossing. Invisalign aligners are used for around 9–24 months on average but this timeline may be extended in certain cases, so it is essential that users consult their orthodontist every 6 weeks to monitor their progress and make the necessary plans regarding their use.

Nonetheless, once the aligners have achieved the desired outcome, with the user now in possession of a winning smile and excellent dental health, a retainer must still be worn to ensure the shape and form of their mouth is not allowed to return to its former state.

Key principles of clear, wire-free aligners

Traditional metal braces are effective in repositioning teeth and helping them look much more esthetically pleasing than before. They do this by using brackets which pull the teeth into the desired position, with these brackets adjusted periodically according to the user’s needs. However, there is now an innovative new technology available in clear, wire-free aligners that are just as effective without negatively impacting upon the user’s dental health or comfort.
