What You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation Surgery

Women’s breasts are one of the most important organs

as they are perceived in many cultures as a symbol of womanhood. When women have beautiful breasts, it increases their overall level of confidence, which is why breast augmentation surgery has become so popular these days. This popularity has given way to a huge surge in the number of beauty businesses, some by genuine experts who are truly knowledgeable and have valid certification, and some who are not. There are many cases where people have treatments or surgeries performed, and then end up regretting the results—in some cases, those results are so bad that they cannot be corrected or undone, as can be seen in news articles from around the world. In this article, therefore, we would like to provide the opportunity for any women thinking of having breast augmentation surgery to learn about what it really means, and to offer some information that may be helpful. Let’s see what we can learn today.

How has breast augmentation surgery changed over the years?

“I think that the general methodology is not that different, in that surgery is still the means by which breast augmentation is carried out. However, what has changed and developed quite a lot are the surgical techniques and the medical expertise of the doctors carrying out the procedures. New technologies and discoveries have made medical learning and study easier, which also means new techniques for breast augmentation surgery are being developed. The most obvious change, however, is probably the main material used in breast augmentation; silicone, which has been developed to 5th generation silicone gel implants. You will find that silicone implants today are far stronger, more resistant to rupture or have a longer lifespan. Since the material used is better quality, it promotes better adherence, thus solving issues of implant rupture far better than in the past. While there are other methods of breast augmentation currently being developed, such as fat transfer, which is when fat tissue is removed from other parts of your own body and injected into the breast area, many doctors still do not recommend this particular method because, while fat injection isn’t dangerous in itself, it can make the detection of breast cancer more difficult.  At this time, while it’s not yet clear whether or not fat transfer has an effect on breast cancer, the nature of fat is such that after it has been injected and is left for a while, it can calcify and harden. Hence, when a woman goes for her annual breast cancer check-up, the clusters caused by fat necrosis and calcification are indistinguishable from abnormalities associated with breast cancer, thus causing “mammographic confusion”. As a result, doctors need to carry out a biopsy to make a correct diagnosis. This is one of the reasons why silicone implants are still the standard method used in breast augmentation today.”

What are the main materials used in breast augmentation surgery?

The 2 materials most commonly used in breast augmentation surgery are:

  1. Silicone Gel Implants: This material has proven to be highly stable, particularly with “form-stable silicone”, as the material has fewer liquid properties, and so these are even more likely to remain intact, even in the case of a rupture, and are therefore classified as highly durable material. Silicone implants can have a variety of characteristics. For example, they may be either textured or smooth. Silicone implants can be inserted in 1 of 3 ways—under your breasts, under your arms, or around your nipples—according to the discretion of the surgeon and depending on your body, the type of implant, and how much enlargement is being done.  The advantages of using silicone implants in breast augmentation surgery are that they look and feel more like natural breast tissue and are less likely to wrinkle or ripple under the skin; they allow the patient to move about as usual; recovery time is fairly minimal after surgery; the implants are durable and long-lasting; and there is less chance of dangerous complications.
  2. Saline Implants: With saline implants, the outer shell is made of silicone which is filled with sterile salt water known as saline. The surgeon will make the incision and then insert the saline implant into the breast by either one of these methods; they can begin as an empty silicone shell which is inserted and then filled to the desired size with the saline solution, or they may pre-fill the saline and then insert into the breast. The advantages of saline implants are that if a saline implant leaks, the solution is sterile and is not dangerous to the body in any way. In the case of a leak or rupture, the doctor can find it and they can easily be refilled. The size of the implants can also be increased without the need for undergoing additional surgery. The disadvantages are that they don’t look as natural; they wrinkle or ripple more easily; and they are more likely to rupture and leak.

How should I prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

  1. Abstain from drinking alcohol or smoking for at least 1 week.
  2. Refrain from taking any medications in the aspirin group, all types of painkillers, and any vitamins that affect blood clotting for at least 2 weeks before undergoing surgery.
  3. If you have any chronic or underlying diseases or any history of drug allergies, you should inform the doctor of the details of these.
  4. Before undergoing breast augmentation surgery, you should not eat or drink anything during the final 6 hours before surgery, and should wash your hair and shower to cleanse your body thoroughly.

Most importantly, make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions strictly after surgery. If you do, you’ll experience the positive changes you desire from your breast augmentation surgery.
