Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery

Samitivej Children’s Hospital uses advanced medical technology to increase the quality of medical services and performed surgeries. Pediatric minimally invasive surgery (MIS) or laparoscopic surgery, allows for children and infants to experience as little operative trauma as possible. The medical equipment used during pediatric minimally invasive surgery ranges from 2, 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter, meaning that the affected tissue area is greatly lessened. Other benefits of pediatric minimally invasive surgery include:

• Increased safety– with smaller incisions, there’s less trauma to the body and far less blood loss.
• Decreased scarring– most incisions only require a stitch or two to close. In pediatric minimally invasive surgery, these incisions are only 2-5 millimeters in length.
• Faster recovery– whereas recovery from traditional surgeries typically takes six to eight weeks, patients who have undergone minimally invasive procedures usually recover in only two.
• Decreased length of hospital stay– most MIS procedures are associated with a 23 hour discharge or scheduled outpatient surgery.
